Compensation for flight delays

If you have suffered flight delays, either as part of the disruption this week, or for any other reason, you might want to remember that you have nothing to lose in seeing if you are entitled to compensation.

You might remember that in April this year we featured a website dedicated to fighting cases on behalf of passengers who have suffered flying delays. The response then was phenomenal, but it is all so easy to forget about these sites when you actually come to need them.

Originally formed in Potsdam, the capital city of the German federal state of Brandenburg, the website refund.me was the brainchild of former TV host and journalist Eve Büchner, who started the company in August last year after a friend pointed out the European legislation that allows inconvenienced passengers to claim, but Eve realised that access to enforcing the regulations and gaining compensation was far from simple.

Now the site has expanded into Spain and hopes to go some way to closing the gap in what airlines are managing to avoid paying.

Eve explains, “It works really quickly. Users just have to key in their flight number and departure date and the high-tech system checks whether they’re entitled to compensation according to EU Regulation 261/2004”.

EC Regulation 261/2004 established common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellations, or long delays of flights.

But the system goes beyond just offering advice, Eve continued, “It then generates an EU compliant claim form with all the required details. If the claim is enforced successfully, the airline will pay compensation of up to €600.

refund.me aims to receive compensation as quickly as possible and has a good success rate”.

It is perhaps obvious that airlines would shy away from encouraging claims against them, but as it is a law which benefits consumers, it can´t be ignored. With a potential of 400 million euro left unclaimed last year, the growth of the site is testament to the success already achieved by the company, and those they have already successfully helped.

So, you really do have nothing to lose. Keep in mind they may be busy right now, but pop along to refund.me, put in your details and see if you are entitled to compensation or not, it will only take a minute and you could be “quids in”.
