The town hall of Orihuela is appealing for help to trace the owner of a four-wheeled drive vehicle that was seen driving on the beaches of the coast on Wednesday, causing considerable damage to wooden walkways and beach furniture. They hope to track down the owner of the vehicle and report them for the damage caused, in the hope of receiving compensation on behalf of the residents of the municipality who will have to pay the bill to repair the damage caused by the reckless driver.

There has been an increasing number of commercial operators dumping garden waste on the streets of Orihuela Costa, to which the town hall has asked that if anybody spots these, they take down the contact details or registration number of the vehicles, or try to take a photograph without entering into confrontation, so that the town hall can advise these people of the illegality of their actions.

The town hall also wants to remind residents of the need to contact them to receive advice as to the best time to place garden waste out for collection. With the new method of collection and recycling, the vehicles have considerably more availability to collect garden waste, but only if the trucks are made aware of where to pick up and when, a situation coordinated by the town hall.

Orihuela town hall has this week approved grants for 55 families, sharing a budget of 17,029 euro, which are intended to help those families struggling through the financial crisis to pay their monthly bills for electricity and water supplies, as well as towards pharmacy costs. The grant will no doubt be another welcome relief to a number of families during these testing times.

Orihuela will play host to the first international string orchestra competition in February next year, with a 3,000 euro prize allocated for the winner of the contest, plus other prizes for those who come close. The groups of four first violins, four seconds violins, two violas, two cellos and a double bass, will play a number of compositions selected by a jury, with the winner ultimately being announced in a live final, the winning piece becoming a standard arrangement for the future of the Orihuela City Orchestra.

Final approval has been granted for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the N332 at La Regia. Bids have been collated for the contractor to be approved, with work banned by the roads department of the national government until September, preparation work to build the pieces of the structure will now commence, enabling the onsite work to start as soon as the summer restrictions are lifted.

Orihuela city has been awash with fiestas this week, as one of the biggest and most historic celebrations took place, all surrounding the celebration of the symbol of Orihuela, the Oriol.
