The marketing department of Iberia airlines are celebrating the success of their latest campaign this week, after they launched a novel way of securing sales on the Madrid to New York route.

The company offered a total of 222 seats on their flights as part of a “Dutch Auction”, with a starting price of 600 euro, constantly reducing until all seats had been snapped up, whatever the lowest price might have been.

The success for the company came when the immediately sold 134 of the seats at the starting price of 600 euro, the remaining allocation going for 599.99, with a saving of just a single cent.

However, the remaining bidders who missed out on the offer might be interested to know that the standard fare around the time was being offered at 610 euro, so there was still a lot of choice available.

This isn´t the first time the company has offered this kind of deal, but it is the most successful, after previous attempts had to be abandoned. In the interest of transparency, the company has also listed the bidders so that there can be no allegation of rigging.
