Play Time

Our look at future TV goes from reality to beyond this week, with the promise of something to satisfy everybody… Probably.

Yorkshire seems to be getting a little more of the action at the moment, following on from the reality show focussing on buses, this week we see Channel 4 launch Educating Yorkshire. Filmed at Thornhill Community Academy near Dewsbury, this brand new eight-part series captures every detail of life in the school from playground hijinks and inspirational lessons to life-changing events. It follows the work of Head teacher Jonny Mitchell, himself born and raised in the area, to better the chances for all his students and build on successive years of improving exam results. Helped by a stellar team of staff, Mr Mitchell is on a quest to drive up standards and improve the reputation of his school in the local area.

Sticking with Channel 4, on Friday 20 September, you can head back to the 80s for a night of nostalgic fun. The evening will host a night of classic shows, all given a nostalgic twist and in between programmes, viewers will be treated to a host of comedy sketches featuring some interesting celebrities. Kicking things off is the return of Fifteen to One, back on screens after ten years. With Adam Hills at the helm, we’ll see fifteen celebrities go head to head as they battle it out to win the notoriously tough quiz show. There’ll then be an 80s makeover of Cats Does Countdown and Alan Carr will welcome some 80’s sparkle into the studio in a special Chatty Man. The programming will end with a documentary throwback to 80s music show Rewind: The Tube, which will look at the programme’s rise and fall, the social context that it existed in and also feature a host of stars looking back at their contributions.

Royal fans will be keen to know that the Duke of Cambridge has given his first interview since the birth of Prince George, to be screened on ITV next month in the documentary ‘Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope’, or at least that´s the title at the moment. In the interview with Jane Treays, Prince William shares his joy at becoming a father, talks about his hopes for his new family and his passion for wildlife conservation as well as his love of Africa.

Drama fans need to prepare to switch to ITV 1, as Vera returns on Sunday the 25th of August, as D.C.I. Vera Stanhope returns. The four part series promises a roller coaster of drama and emotion, inspired by the bestselling novels and characters created by acclaimed crime writer Ann Cleeves, Oscar nominated and award-winning actress Brenda Blethyn reprises her lead role as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope alongside actor and filmmaker David Leon who plays Vera’s trusty sidekick and surrogate son Detective Sergeant Joe Ashworth.

Over on the BBC, Joe Godwin, Director, BBC Children’s TV said, “Technology is firmly embedded in children’s lives and has opened up opportunities to inform, educate and entertain them in new ways”, explaining why the channel aimed at the youngest audience members has launched CBeebies Playtime, a mobile app for Android, iOS and Kindle Fire devices in the UK.

Finally, Channel 5 is getting bigger, with the announcement of Supersize Season, with 6 brand new documentaries exploring a range of weight related subjects. From Britain’s Biggest Man, 41 year old Keith Martin, bed bound for the past decade and weighing almost 70 stone, Keith is eating himself to death. He desperately needs help, as well as an in-depth look at the controversial and astonishing world of ‘gainers’, a group of obese women who are determined to be as big as possible, amongst other subjects.
