From the 1st of September, bull fighting will return to Spanish TV, with José Antonio Morante de la Puebla, who is recovering from a revenge attack by a bull, and Alejandro Talavante taking to the ring after a break from television screens for over a year.
In a statement, the broadcaster says that the return is “part of the philosophy of the RTVE Corporation to recognise the national fiesta in response to its cultural, economic and social development in Spain”.
The return of the bulls to TVE is possible through an agreement reached last year with the Mesa del Toro, which involves the transfer of rights to broadcast the tournaments, “This means that bullfighters, and livestock and businessman José María Garzón transfer their broadcasting rights to facilitate transmission via TVE, who only face the costs necessary for the technical deployment for retransmission”, explains TVE.
After a 5 year break, it was September, 2012, when bull fighting was last seen on TV, with an average audience of 1.2 million viewers and a 12.7% audience share. In context, last weekend, the biggest audience watching Spanish television chose Antena 3, with 3.6 million people tuning in to watch the Formula 1, a record 35.5% of the audience share. In the UK last week, just over 2 million viewers watched Sam Evans take victory in the Big Brother final on Channel 5, whereas 6.9 million people saw Peter Capaldi announced as the next Doctor Who. On Friday, 7.6 million people tuned in to see Tina argue with David in Coronation Street.
