Official figures released this week reveal that across the Vega Baja in May, 839 people have found work, with the overall registered jobless figure now standing 34,927.
Torrevieja led the way, where unemployment figures have continued to decline for the fourth consecutive month, with a total of 345 unemployed people finding work, 231 of whom were in the 25 to 44 years of age group, but still leaving 9,581 people without work. The service sector, construction and agriculture are the three main areas where growth is recorded. This year, 922 people have found work so far in Torrevieja, an overall drop of 9%.
Orihuela was next with 94 people finding paid employment, declining for the eighth consecutive month, with a total of 7,027 now registered as unemployed. In fact, since September 1,009 people have found work, according to the councilor for employment, Manuel Gallud, a drop of 12.5%. Gallud also pointed out that this figure is also lower than the 7,205 people who were unemployed when this government team took over in 2011, a task which he has stressed was done after “inheriting more than 60 million euro of debt”, and “without raising a single tax rate” to the residents.
Other areas where jobseekers have fallen are Albatera, with 91 people finding work, 58 more residents of Almoradí are now employed, and there are 42 fewer unemployed workers in Pilar de la Horadada.
Although not by any great numbers, Benejúzar, Benferri, Granja de Rocamora and San Fulgencio all saw a rise in unemployment.
Overall, across the Vega Baja, the 22 to 44 years of age group saw the biggest drop, with 614 people finding work, followed by those over 45, with a total of 144, whereas just 81 young people, under the age of 25, secured employment.
There was a significant difference in the sexes however, with 569 and 270 women finding work.
