The DGT traffic department now has five helicopters fitted with their airborne radar speed detection equipment, Pegasus, the fifth launched in time to serve the road network in time for the weekend surrounding the 1st of November holidays.
All five helicopters have been patrolling the skies in the run up to the holiday, paying particular attention to conventional roads, the location of most fatal incidents on the road network.
According to data from the DGT, Pegasus is five times more successful than conventional ground based radars and, since the launch of the first helicopter, 17,892 vehicles have been checked, of which 3,199 drivers have been reported. The most serious offense staged a car travelling at 242 kilometres per hour in a 120 limited zone, and another driving at 199 kilometres per hour where the limit was 90.
The Pegasus radars mounted on the helicopters of the Dgt have two cameras, a panoramic one used for tracking and capturing speed, and the second that can read the license plate even at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour, up to 300 meters high and one kilometre from the target vehicle.
