During the month of September, a total of 196 drivers were brought before the courts on criminal charges, the highest form of sanction available, for crimes against road safety.
Of those who faced court action, 60 were for driving without the required permission or licence, 135 for doing so under the influence of alcoholic beverages or drugs, and 1 for travelling at such a high speed it fell into the realms of the criminal process.
However, the total number of offences recorded which were severe enough to be classified as criminal has decreased by 10.50% in relation to those recorded in the same month last year.
By province, in Alicante, 20 drivers were brought to court for lacking a permit or licence, 58 for driving so much under the influence of alcohol it required court intervention, and 1 for speeding, having been clocked travelling at 178 kilometres per hour on a section of road where the maximum permitted limit was 80.
In Valencia, 34 drivers lacked permission or licence and 68 were driving under the effects of alcohol.
In Castellón, there were 6 drivers without a permit or licence and 9 severly under the influence of alcohol.
