Spanish airport authority AENA has announced that they will start charging to use the luggage trolleys at their airports at Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Alicante, a move it hopes will save only in the Madrid airfield alone some 3.2 million per year. Sources have explained that although there is no specific date for the launch of the system, with a one euro fee per use, Madrid-Barajas airport will be the first network to have this new management model implemented. They have also said that those in the boarding area will remain free of charge.
A coach from Archena came off the road and overturned on the A-31 motorway of Alicante in Tuesday, having dropped passengers at Madrid airport and returning to its base. As a result, only the driver was on board the vehicle, which ended its journey on its right side in a ditch next to the road.
An investigation report released this week into why a Ryanair Boeing 737-800, from East Midlands to Alicante in January 2011, landed at Alicante without clearance, has revealed that, “The incident was caused by the crew’s failure to request landing clearance, believing subconsciously they already had this clearance, and by the deficient supervision and monitoring by the ATC stations involved (Valencia TACC and ALC TWR), which became aware of the aircraft’s landing only after the fact.” The aircraft landed safely with 168 passengers and 6 crew on board, but the investigation was hampered by flight data recorder information having not being preserved. The report criticizes both sides and operating procedures have been adapted to prevent a similar incident reoccurring.
A group of logistics companies in Spain have signed an agreement to transport food around the country, which would otherwise be discarded, to enable surplus stocks to be delivered to the needy and the hungry. Acotral, Carreras Grupo Logístico, Chep, DHL, Europool, Integra2, Logifrio, Salvesen and Stef Iberia have all agreed to transport food for free to “food banks”, as well as providing storage space, as needed, to make sure as little of the food goes to waste. They have also agreed a training program for volunteers to ensure everybody gains some benefits from the scheme.
