The patient who received the first face transplant in Spain, identified as 46 year old Francisco M.G., has died, but due to an underling condition.
The patient received the transplant in 2009, under the control of Valencia based surgeon Pedro Cavadas, after suffering an “aggressive cancer”. Having travelled from his home on the Canary Islands, Franciso also received the first tongue and jaw transplant in the world.
The patient then had to undergo a two year process of rehabilitation, eight months of which he spent in residential care with his mother in Valencia. He then returned home, where he was being closely monitored.
Earlier this year, his medical condition worsened, with him also unable to be fed through his mouth. He continued to be treated in hospital in Valencia, where his condition worsened.
His death has now been confirmed, but the family are asking that details be left vague as to his identity, and the condition from which he ultimately lost his life.
