THE LEADER CHARITY GOLF DAY

In association with the Torrevieja Lions and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services at Vistabella 15th June 2013.

Today’s competition was a charity event in aid of ALPE which is the school and occupational centre for physically and mentally children and adults in Torrevieja who have not received their funding from the Valencian authorities this year and who are in danger of closing as a result.

The charity day was run by the LEADER in conjunction with the Lions Club of Torrevieja and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services and consisted of an 18 hole stableford with a shotgun start at 8.30am for a full field of 54 players.

The course was in beautiful condition with some of the best greens in the area and we must say a big thank you to Pablo Riestra and his team who worked wonders in collecting money, preparing cards and processing the scores and producing the winners list.

Before moving onto the results there are many thanks to be said to numerous people who gave their time and money to make this event such a success.

Firstly to the LEADER for organising and promoting the event and for their valued €100 cash donation

Secondly to the Lions Club of Torrevieja for selecting ALPE as the worthwhile cause and for providing the ‘survival’ packs of drinks and cake on the first tee and acting as official photographers.

Thirdly to Ian Gibson who is a local entertainer who provided us with a few quips and jokes while we awaited the processing of the scores and to Robin Parks the restaurant owner at Vistabella who provided us with refreshments and superb BBQ.

We held an auction of 2 x green fees and buggy vouchers provided by the following courses which raised €565 on the day and we say a big thank you to them:

Alicante, Altorreal, Corvera, El Plantio, Hacienda Del Alamo, La Peraleja, La Serena, Las Colinas, Lo Romero and Vistabella

The excellent Asador Don Mariano Spanish Restaurant based in Cabo Roig also kindly provided 5 x vouchers for meals for two people and if in the area pop in and try their menu options.

Both Spec savers and Ian Comaskey provided €100 vouchers, Barry Allsop golf raffle prizes and Kameleon provided a polo shirt.

Finally (and hopefully not missing anyone else who contributed to the day) we thank Costa Blanca Green Fee Services,’ Mick the Grip’ Reeves and of course Vistabella themselves and our thanks go to them for their support.

On the day there was remarkably consistent golf played which reflected in good scoring and the nearest the pin prizes were well contested and the winners on the day were as follows:

3rd – Tony White – 38 points (trophy and Vistabella voucher)
4th – Jim Kelly – 36 points (Altorreal voucher)
5th – Ben Johnson – 35 points (Asador Don Mariano voucher)
6th – Stan Natynczk -35 points (Asador Don Mariano voucher)
7th – Campbell Conn – 35 points (Asador Don Mariano voucher)
8th – Phil Brigham – 35 points (Asador Don Mariano voucher)

The day can’t pass without mention of a unique event that took play after only 20 minutes of play when Dave Bensley (Lo Marabu G) called the organisers from the course informing them that he had torn his shorts from top to tail and with the help of Vistabella member Ray Parker and his wife Sue we provided him with another pair plus 3 x golf balls.

The day was a huge success overall and while the till rolls are still being checked the Lions Club informed me that they expect the final result to be a €1000 donation to ALPE and so once again a big thank you to everyone involved on the day.
