BLUE IS THE COLOUR

The Security Department of the Basque Government has spent 34,000 euro on 723 new polo shirts and 174 pairs of trousers for their Ertzaintza, their regional police force, which cannot be used because they are the wrong colour, and which cannot be returned or refunded.

The standard colour combination for the force is mostly dark blue and black, with elements of red and white, but the uniforms which were delivered are green, prompting one disgruntled officer to say, “Who do they think we are, the Guardia Civil?”

According to a spokesperson for the Basque Department of Safety, there appears to have been a technical error, resulting in the items being chosen for speed of delivery from available materials, and a number of other equally unnecessary excuses, other than the possible motivation of saving money in a transitional period between governments, all of which still mean that if the uniforms were wore it would go against one of the conditions of service where respect for their uniform is enforced.

According to the spokesperson, the department tried to return the goods, as the colours didn´t match those authorised by the government, but they could not return the clothes because “the contract would not allow it”.
