Turbulence caused injuries to 12 passengers on board a TAM airlines Airbus A330-200 aircraft flying from Madrid to Sao Paulo on Monday morning.
The jet, with 200 passengers on board, was forced to make an emergency landing in the North Eastern city of Fortaleza on Monday morning, after panic spread through the aircraft carrying international passengers from Brazil, Spain, Poland and Columbia.
The flight, which took off from Madrid at 22:00 on Sunday night, hit turbulence 250 nautical miles northeast of Fortaleza, near Ecuador. Passengers reported that many of them were asleep at the time, when the aircraft suddenly jolted, causing loose items to hit the cabin ceiling, which included those passengers not strapped into their seats.
The crew made an emergency call and decided to divert to Fortaleza, where the aircraft landed safely, about 45 minutes later.
The airline confirmed that 12 passengers and crew were injured, all but two being discharged from hospital a short time after their arrival, the two more seriously injured passengers remaining in hospital for observations.
The airline has regretted the incident in a statement, and apologised to the 200 passengers who were affected.
