An Alitalia Airbus A320, operating on flight AZ-63 from Madrid to Rome Fiumicino, made an emergency landing on Monday with the right hand landing gear still retracted in the aircraft.
The plane, with 151 people on board, decided to fly over the airport in order for ground staff to confirm what the cockpit indicators were telling the pilots, that the landing gear was not properly deployed. This situation was confirmed and the crew subsequently prepared for an emergency landing with the right hand main gear remaining retracted due to the right main gear doors not opening.
The aircraft landed on runway 16L about 50 minutes after aborting the first approach and 25 minutes after the low approach, before the aircraft came to a stop and was evacuated by using the emergency slides. Luckily there were no injuries as the crew performed a “text book” emergency procedure.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that an American military aircraft made an emergency landing on the island of Mallorca, displaying signs of having been shot at. No further details of this incident are available, due to the sensitivity of military operations. The incident did not cause delays to commercial flights.
