A young boy remains critically ill and in a coma after falling 15 feet whilst playing on a government building site in the Orihuela village of La Aparecida.
The 15 year old is suffering from multiple head injuries and flooded lungs after stumbling through the skylight just before midnight last Saturday night.
What began as a game has shocked the residents in the oriolana hamlet after the young boy climbed over the fence enclosing the unfinished building site of the proposed civic center. While playing inside the building with two other boys, he fell through a skylight at a height of five meters. The child was rushed to the San Bartolome Hospital and then quickly transferred to the General Hospital of Elche where he remains in an induced coma and in critical condition.
The perimeter fence had recently been repaired following recent damage which had been caused by strong gusts of wind. It would seem that, along with his friends, the youth had climbed over the 2 meter fence to gain entry and according to sources, following the accident he remained conscious for up to half an hour before the arrival of the emergency services.
He was taken to the San Bartolome Hospital but was immediately referred to General Hospital of Elche where he was put into an induced coma. Doctors say they will wait for 72 hours whilst they monitor his progress.
As a child from a well known local family the accident has shocked the whole community. His parents, José Antonio Martínez and Pilar Aracil, have run the popular Bar Casa Rincón de Pepe where residents play pool and buy their lottery tickets. The business was closed yesterday while the mother and father remain at their son’s bedside.
The family remains in a state of shock. They say they are particularly critical of the council stating that the incident occurred on a building site that should have been completed many years ago. The government team has offered its support to the family who they visited last Monday.
Just 3 months ago a motion was passed at the December Orihuela plenary approving funds to the finalise the work at the unfinished centre and put the work out to public tender, using a portion of the money obtained by selling coastal land.
At the time the PP group wanted to oppose the proposal, despite the plans being their idea in the first place, saying that they had their own way of funding the project.
