Official figures published last Thursday show that the minimum wage in Spain during 2013 was €9,034 which, according to tax office statistics, equates to just €645 a month when spread over 14 payments.
That was the amount that thirty-four percent of Spain’s 16,682,861 employees managed to earn, including virtually all workers aged under 25.
Amongst the young the figure was much higher with almost 75% of the million working people aged 18 to 25 earning the minimum salary, while in the 26–35 age range, the figure was 38%.
The tax office figures also show that almost half of Spain’s total workforce, 7.7 million people, was made up of people earning less than €1,000 a month.
In December 2013 politicians froze the country’s minimum wage for 2014, a move criticized by many who argued the purchasing power had gone down 5.5 per cent in four years.
The Spanish minimum wage is almost the same as the Greek figure of €683.76 and below that of Italy (€880). Only Portugal, with €565.83, pays its employees less and is the only country in Western Europe with a lower minimum wage. The current UK minimum hourly rate is £6.50 while in Spain it is £2.18 per hour (€2.68)
