Opposition councillors have called for the resignation of a San Miguel de Salinas councillor who ran up a personal 65-euro bill on a council mobile phone. UPyD councillor María José Costa has apologised and refunded the money to the authority, amidst claims that she had been making calls to a premium Tarot Love line, something that she has strenuously denied.
The councillor said she had made a “very serious mistake”, and that she was going through a “difficult time emotionally”. She added that she had made some calls from her car and she thought her personal unit had been connected, as opposed to the council-funded phone, which she ended up using by mistake.
Opposition PSOE and IU councillors want José Costa to quit, and have demanded to see the phone bill to clarify the matter. UPyD are in a coalition deal with the Partido Popular in San Miguel, which has kept the PP in power after it lost its overall majority in local elections back in May 2015.
