Friday is a national holiday in Spain, celebrating everything the country has to offer. However, during these times when calls for separatism seem to be growing, there are many people who would like to use the day to break down barriers and unite the country once again.

Often criticised for being a tool that is leading to the degradation of traditional society, social media is being picked as a platform for unity, with users being asked to turn their profile pictures to the flag of Spain for the day in support of a united country.
The campaign is also reaching out to those not on social media, with others asked to display the Spanish flag from the window of their home or balcony, in a patriotic stance as one.
Perhaps this year unity is more important than ever, with many areas of the Iberian peninsula looking for their independence, a notion that the British residents can at least appreciate as separation from the EU is still developing, but all differences aside, it is a chance to come together as one in celebration of the wonderfully diverse country that is Spain.
