The president of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig, has proposed by letter to the Committee of Regions of the European Union to release patents for vaccines against coronavirus to increase vaccine production in order to speed up the process, which remains below the forecasts and what would be advisable to tackle the pandemic, as it has transmitted.
After maintaining contacts with heads of European regions, Puig proposes a joint action to “find solutions that allow reviewing the mechanisms of intellectual and patent protection” in a letter addressed to the president of the European Committee of the Regions, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, and also appeals to the main Community institutions (the Council, the Parliament and the European Commission, as well as the European Economic and Social Committee).
The regional president has indicated that “this debate must now be opened” and seek “either the temporary suspension of patents to treat or prevent Covid or enable a third way between the total independence of the laboratories and the legal uncertainty.” For example, enabling “compensation formulas”.
