Red Days in Spain 2023

The Spanish employment ministry has published the list of national holidays for 2023 (the equivelent of Bank Holidays inthe UK), commonly known as Red Days, or the working calendar.

Red Days 2023

Red Days are national holidays, recognised throughout the country, to which we must also add the regional holidays, some of which we have also included in this list, and then there are also local holidays, celebrated in each municipality.

In the first place, there are the non-replaceable national holidays, that is, those that apply to all the autonomous communities, which cannot exercise the right to change for another date that is more appropriate to them by tradition. In the year 2023 there will be the following national holidays:

April 7 – Good Friday

May 1 – Labour Day

August 15 – Assumption of the Virgin

​October 12 – National Holiday of Spain

November 1 – All Saints

December 6 – Spanish Constitution Day

December 8 – Immaculate Conception

December 25 – Christmas day

Secondly, these are the holidays that apply to the entire Spanish territory, but the different regions can change the dates for other holidays that are more typical of them by tradition.

In this way, the substitutable national holidays for 2023 are shown below, as well as the

January 2 – Monday following the New Year’s Eve: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León and Murcia.

January 6 – Epiphany of the Lord: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.

April 6 – Holy Thursday: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.

July 25 – Santiago Apóstol: Castilla y León, Galicia, Navarra and the Basque Country.

Finally, there are some holidays in the work calendar that are specific to certain autonomous communities, so it is only a holiday in that specific territory. Thus, these are the holidays in each autonomous community:

Andalusia: February 28 – Andalusia Day

Aragon: April 24 – Monday after Saint George, Aragon Day

Asturias: September 8 – Asturias Day

Balearic Islands: March 1 – Balearic Day and April 10 – Easter Monday

Canary Islands: May 30 – Canary Islands Day

Cantabria: July 28 – Cantabria Institutions Day and September 15 – La Bien Aparecida

Castilla-La Mancha: May 31 – Castilla-La Mancha Day and June 8 – Corpus Christi

Catalonia: April 10 – Easter Monday, June 24 – San Juan, September 11 – National Holiday of Catalonia, and December 26 – San Esteban

Valencian Community: April 10 – Easter Monday, June 24 – San Juan, and October 9 – Valencian Community Day

Extremadura: February 21 – Carnival, and September 8 – Extremadura Day

Galicia: May 17 – Galician Literature Day

Community of Madrid: May 2 – Festival of the Community of Madrid

Region of Murcia: June 9 – Day of the Region of Murcia

Navarre: April 10 – Easter Monday

Basque Country: April 10 – Easter Monday

La Rioja: April 10 – Easter Monday, and June 9 – La Rioja Day

Ceuta: June 29 – Eidul Adha Sacrifice Festival, August 5 – Our Lady of Africa, and September 2 – Ceuta Day

Melilla: April 21 – Eid Fitr Festival, and June 29 – Sacrifice Festival-Aid Adha

Remember, on top of these, we must add the local holidays, which you can find out about from your local social security office or town hall.
