On Thursday, there will be a major nuclear incident in Madrid, which will force the evacuation of the population, and the emergency services to deal with the aftermath. However, this nightmare scenario is just a drill, preparing the emergency workers in the event that something like this does ever happen, although it is of course hoped the lessons the learn will never have to be put into practice.
The National School for Civil Protection and Emergencies, located in Rivas (Madrid) will carry out the nuclear incident simulation exercise, in which 274 people will participate and which will lead to the activation of emergency plans.
The incident exercise will simulate the release of radioactive material and will motivate the activation of emergency plans and a subsequent evacuation of the population. Specifically, 274 participants from local, regional and national organisations such as the National Police, the Guardia Civil, the Spanish Cruz Roja, SESCAM, the National Security Council, the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the Junta de Castilla y León or firefighters from the City Council will participate.
Likewise, drones from the UME will intervene and an Operational Coordination Centre (CECOP), an advanced command post, a mobile classification and decontamination station of the UME and a Citizen Attention Centre of the Spanish Cruz Roja will be deployed.
