Withdrawal of masks to be debated on Friday

The Interterritorial Health Council will debate the removal of masks in health centres on Friday afternoon. This meeting has already received double criticism, on the one hand, those representing the elderly and vulnerable who consider the withdrawal “crazy”, and on the other, some communities have branded the measure as “electoralist”.

The matter will be discussed in the second point of the agenda, entitled ‘Epidemiological situation and vaccination against COVID-19, and agreements that proceed’, as long as the report from the Alert and Emergency Coordination Centre arrives on time.

Last Friday, the Minister of Health, José Miñones, assured that the final decision on whether or not to remove the masks in those places where it is still mandatory would fall precisely on the experts. “You have to do it rigorously, you have to do it seriously,” said the minister.

In fact, Miñones defended its use, especially to protect the elderly from respiratory viruses. “We could think about the day centres or where our parents, grandparents and elders are, and whether it should be withdrawn there or not,” he added.

It is not yet clear, however, whether this withdrawal is “prolonged, definitive or phased.” It is also not known with certainty if it will be withdrawn in all health centres, social health centres and pharmacies.
