Social Security affiliates linked to tourist activities increased by 5.6% in June compared to the same month of the previous year to stand at 2,765,865. This is the best June in the historical series, according to Turespaña data. Tourism employment now accounts for 13.4% of the total number of affiliates in the national economy.
The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, described the data as “extraordinary, on the path of the magnificent behaviour of tourism employment throughout the year”. For the head of Tourism, “the membership figures confirm our good forecasts for 2023, the year of the full recovery of tourism in Spain.”
The increase in absolute terms was 146,184 new workers registered for employment with respect to the same month of the previous year. It is a growth that affects all branches of activity. While in the hotel industry there were 90,847 affiliates, in travel agencies and tour operators it reached 5,936. The rest of tourist activities also registered an increase of 49,401 workers.
In June, the number of wage earners in the tourism sector, which represents 81.9% of the total affiliated workers in said sector, increased by 6.8% compared to the same month of the previous year. Self-employment in tourism, which represents 18.1% of all affiliated workers, increased by 0.5%.
In the month of June 2023, employment in the hotel industry and travel agencies/tour operators as a whole increased in all the autonomous communities. In absolute figures, the largest increases occurred in Andalusia, Catalonia, the Community of Madrid, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. In relative terms, the year-on-year increase in the Canary Islands (7%) stands out.
