When do kids go back to school in Spain?

There are many reasons why you might be longing for the kids to go back to school, but the bad (or good, depending on your opinion) news is they still have the best part of 5 weeks off, in general terms.

The autonomous communities, which are the ones that have competence in educational matters, have already published the school calendars for the next academic year 2023-2024. They include the Christmas and Easter holiday periods, public holidays and non-school days. In each of the regions, the start and end dates of the classes are different. In addition, various holidays, and also non-school days, differ.

Of course, it should be remembered that this 2023 both December 23 and 24 and January 6 fall on a weekend.

Some festivities, such as the National Holiday, the Immaculate Conception or Constitution Day are common to most regions and some include holiday periods for Carnival. Plus, local areas can also determine a couple of school holidays throughout the year, so it’s best to check locally, but we will give you a general idea.

Andalusia

In the Andalusian community, classes in the first cycle of Infant will begin on September 1, while those of the second cycle and Primary will begin on September 11, 2023 and end on June 24, 2024. Secondary Education (ESO) classes will on June 25.

As for the holiday periods in Andalusia, Christmas will take place between December 23 and January 7. And if we talk about the Easter holidays, these will take place from March 25 to March 31.

Aragon

This community will begin its classes for Infant, Primary and ESO on September 7 and will end on June 21, 2024. In the case of Baccalaureate courses, these begin later, on September 12, and will end their school period on 21 of June.

If we talk about the holidays, Christmas will be celebrated in the period between December 21 and January 5, both inclusive. As for Easter, this will take place between March 28 and April 5.

Asturias

In the Principality of Asturias, Infant, Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate classes will begin on September 11 and end on June 21. The Christmas holidays will take place between December 23 and January 7; and those of Holy Week between March 23 and April 1.

Balearic Islands

In the Balearic Islands, Infant, Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate students will begin on September 11, 2023 and end on June 21, 2024, although students in the second year of Baccalaureate will finish on May 30.

The Christmas holidays will take place in the period from December 22 to January 5, and Easter from March 28 to April 5.

Basque Country

In the Basque Country, classes will not begin before September 7 for both Infant and Primary as well as ESO and Baccalaureate. All educational stages will end no later than June 21, 2024.

The Christmas holidays will take place between December 23 and January 7 inclusive; and Holy Week between March 28 and April 1.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands has also published its school calendar for the following course, which will begin on September 11 for Infant, Primary and ESO Education. One day later for Baccalaureate – September 12 -, and classes will end for all educational stages on June 21. The students of the second course of Baccalaureate, however, will finish on May 17.

The holidays for Canarian students will take place between December 25 and January 7. On the other hand, Holy Week has been established between March 25 and 29.

Cantabria

In the Cantabrian community, classes will begin on September 7, for Infant and Primary courses, and one day later, -on September 8 -, for ESO and Baccalaureate. They will end on June 24 and 25 respectively.

The Christmas vacation period will be between December 23 and January 7. This region also includes holidays for Carnival from February 12 to 18, and Holy Week is celebrated in classrooms from March 25 to 29.

Castilla la Mancha

The Castilian-Manchegan Community Board has specified the start of the 23-24 school period for all educational stages on September 11, 2023. The school year will end on June 21 of the following year.

The Christmas holidays have been established on December 25 and January 7; and Holy Week will correspond to the period from March 23 to April 1.

Castile y Leon

The Castilian-Leonese community will begin school activities on September 7 for the entire second cycle of Early Childhood and Primary Education and will end on June 21, 2024. Secondary Education and Baccalaureate will begin the academic year on September 13 and will end on the same day than previous cycles.

In Castilla y León Christmas will be celebrated from December 23 to January 7 and Easter will take place from March 23 to April 2.

Catalonia

Catalonia will begin its classes for Infant, Primary and Secondary (ESO) on September 6 and will end on June 21. The Baccalaureate courses will do the same on September 12, which will end their school period on the same day as the previous levels.

Holidays will be held in the period between December 21 and January 7; and Holy Week will be commemorated from March 23 to April 1.

Ceuta and Melilla

Classes in the autonomous city of Ceuta will begin on September 7 for Infants, Primary, ESO and Baccalaureate; and will end on June 21 also for all cycles.

The holidays will be celebrated between December 23 and January 7 for Christmas; and between March 25 and 29 for Easter.

For its part, the autonomous city of Melilla establishes the start of classes also for September 7 in the case of Infant, Primary, Secondary Education (ESO) and Baccalaureate. On the other hand, classes will end on June 21 for all school stages.

The Christmas holidays will take place in the period between December 25 and January 6 inclusive; and those of Holy Week between March 25 and 29.

Extremadura

Extremadura classes for Infant, Primary, and ESO students will begin on September 11 and end on June 20, 2024. In the case of Baccalaureate, they will begin a day later, on September 12, and will end on June 18 in first, and May 10 in second.

Regarding the holidays, Extremadura has established the Christmas period from December 22 to January 7. It is also another of the regions that includes Carnival, celebrating it between February 12 and 13 and its Holy Week will take place from March 25 to April 1.

Galicia

The Xunta de Galicia has already ratified the 2023-2024 school calendar in which it concludes that all educational stages begin on September 11 and end on June 21.

Regarding the Christmas holidays, these will take place from December 22 to January 7. A very celebrated festivity in Galicia is also Carnival, which has been established from Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 February. On the other hand, Holy Week in Galician classrooms will have a period from Monday, March 25 to Monday, April 1.

La Rioja

La Rioja has set September 7 and June 21 as the start and end dates of the educational stages of Infant, Primary, ESO and Baccalaureate.

The holiday periods for the people of La Rioja, Christmas holidays will be held between December 23 and January 7; and those of Holy Week, comprising the period between March 28 and April 7.

Madrid

Classes in the Community of Madrid in Infant and Primary will begin on September 6. The next day, the 7th, will be the start date for Baccalaureate, Vocational and Secondary Training (ESO).

The course will end on July 31 in the first cycle of Infant Education and on June 21 in the second cycle of Infant, Primary, ESO, FP and Baccalaureate.

As for the holidays, Christmas will take place between December 23 and January 7; and those of Holy Week in the period between March 23 and 31.

Murcia

The Region of Murcia has established September 8, 2023 and June 21, 2024 as the start and end dates of Early Childhood, Primary and Special Education. In ESO and Baccalaureate, classes will start on September 11 and end on June 19.

For its part, the school period of the first cycle nursery schools, which are owned by the autonomous community, begins on September 8, 2023 and ends on July 15, 2024.

The Christmas vacation period will be from December 24 to January 6, and Easter from March 25 to April 1.

Navarre

The Foral Community of Navarra has also published the 23-24 school calendar, in which it establishes the beginning of the course between September 7 and 11 for the first cycle of Infant and Primary in its entirety and the end of the course between September 19 and June 21. Classes will begin on September 7 for ESO and Baccalaureate and will end on June 19.

The Christmas holidays will be held from December 23 to January 7, both included; and those of Holy Week will do the same from March 28 to April 7.

Valencian Community

In the Valencian Community, the students of Infant, Primary, ESO and Baccalaureate Education will begin classes on September 11 and will end on June 21.

As for the holidays, Christmas will take place in the period between December 23 and January 7. For its part, Easter will be celebrated from March 28 to April 8.

Remember, these are the general start and end of term periods, national, local, and other days off need to be added, so check with your local authority for the definitive calendar.
