The Council of Güímar in Tenerife reported the arrest of a resident of the La Montañeta area who threw stones at a helicopter that was working to extinguish the fire that was ravaging the island, resulting in the aircraft having to make an emergency landing on a football field in the town.
As explained by the Council on its social networks, at 09:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a helicopter participating in the extinction of the forest fire in Tenerife was attacked with stones that hit the rotor and propellers by a resident of La Montañeta.
The incident meant that the aircraft was grounded, unable to continue with the fire fighting mission, although luckily there were no injuries.
The helicopter belongs to the Cabildo de Tenerife, as reported at the press conference on the evolution of the fire by its president, Rosa Dávila, who said, “the rapid work of the agents of the Local Police and the Guardia Civil has led to the identification and arrest of the aforementioned neighbour”. This attitude “even though it is a minority” endangers the security forces and threatens to destroy “the immense effort that has been made to extinguish the fire” in this municipality.
