The low-cost brand of the Inditex group, Lefties, will open its doors in the heart of Gran Vía in Bilbao on Thursday, marking what is seen as the most important commercial operation carried out in the city since the arrival of Primark, and considered to be the most technologically advanced store on the high street.
The Bilbao store It will occupy 5,500 square metres in the building that El Corte Inglés released last summer at number 20 on the main commercial artery of Euskadi. It will be the firm’s second location in Bizkaia, since the textile giant does not contemplate, in principle, the closure of the facilities located in the Ballonti shopping centre, in Portugalete.
The landing of one of the most profitable brands of Amancio Ortega’s emporium will occur with a notable delay, since the inauguration was scheduled for last autumn. The workers have been working against the clock to meet deadlines and launch an establishment that will have five floors. The store will also have a cafeteria.
Lefties will have several brands from the Galician group as neighbours – Bershka, Stradivarius, Pull&Bear and Massimo Dutti – and will operate a few metres from Primark, with which it will compete in low prices in a section full of youth brands.
Lefties, which combines basics with trendy items, is playing big in Bilbao. Its premises, which will be operated on a rental basis, will be the largest in the world. It will more than double the surface area of the flagship opened in March on Portal de l’Ángel in Barcelona – 2,000 square metres – and will also surpass the one that until now held the record. Located on Madrid’s calle Montera, with nearly 4,000 square metres, spread over three floors.
In addition to the larger size, the Bilbao store will also offer the latest technological references: smart fitting rooms, the new Easy Pay payment method and an area reserved for personalising garments.
Lefties started its journey two decades ago as Zara’s outlet channel, the chain has been gaining independence to become one of the most profitable in the group. It has reoriented its activity and followed in the footsteps of Zara, its older ‘sister’, with the launch of its first perfumery and cosmetics lines.
