The acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, travelled to Seville this Saturday to attend the inauguration of the solar thermal plant at the Heineken Spain factory, the largest in Europe and the first for industrial use in the country.

This visit is seen as a clear example of the Government’s commitment to the decarbonisation of the economy, through the promotion of renewable energies and in line with the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The acting head of the Executive, accompanied by the Government delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández Peñalver, visited the facilities of the solar thermal plant, which will reduce the fossil gas consumption of the Seville factory by more than 60% and will reduce the Heineken Spain’s carbon footprint is almost 7,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The brewery’s project has had an investment of 21 million euro and reflects the success of the public-private collaboration model promoted by the Government and which, in this case, has involved the participation of Engie España, Heineken España and all the levels of public administration. The plant has received aid of 13.3 million euro from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings.

In line with European decarbonisation objectives, the company maintains the commitment to become the first Spanish zero net emissions brewer before 2025, moving five years ahead of the decarbonisation commitment acquired globally. This solar thermal plant will provide Heineken Spain with greater energy autonomy for its own consumption in the manufacturing and packaging processes.
