A treat for cheese fans

If you’re a fan of Manchego cheese, Ciudad Real is the place to be today where the town of Malagón will host the XXIV Regional Contest of Manchego Cheese Qualities organised every year by the Manchego Cheese Brotherhood in different parts of the region. Fifty cheeses will be brought together, which will be tasted by an expert jury, who will decide which of them is the best.

According to the brotherhood, it is an open and public competition, and all Manchego cheese producers, both industrial and artisan, who meet the registration requirements in the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin of Manchego Cheese can participate.

It will have as a jury eminent professionals from the dairy sector, as well as gourmets specialised in Manchego cheese, who will analyse the general aspects individually and guaranteeing the anonymity of the samples presented.

The contest will take place in two phases. The first has to do with the external appearance, while the second with the olfactory and gustatory composition.

Within the fine print, industrial cheeses will be examined, valued from lowest to highest according to their maturation (semi-cured and cured). Artisanal cheeses will also be evaluated in the same way.

Three standards are established for this quality competition: gold, silver and bronze for each category, industrial and artisan.

In total, there are twelve awards, whose presentation will take place on October 21 in the Toledo town of Orgaz, within the framework of the celebration of the XXV National Congress of the Manchego Cheese Routes.

In parallel with the celebration of the XXIV Regional Contest of Manchego Cheese Qualities, with the aim of promoting the consumption of this product, a conference on Manchego cheese, a commented tasting and also a tasting for all people who want to know the singularities of this product, will take place.
