The Guardia Civil has closed the investigation into the homicide of a 90-year-old man who disappeared last September in the town of Sotillo de la Adrada (Ávila). Activating the search device, a few days after the disappearance the agents found the victim inside a drum covered in lime inside the vehicle of the alleged perpetrator of the homicide, his caretaker, when he was trying to hide the body in a farm in this town.
At that moment the detainee incriminated himself. He stated that he was returning from the hospital with this elderly person, of whom he was responsible for his care and attention, at which time they argued and he strangled him with the seat belt.
When the agents received the disappearance alert in September, a search and location device was activated by the Guardia Civil. A few days later the investigators moved to a rural property in the area known as Zarramudo de Sotillo de la Adrada. There they found the suspect, the elderly man’s caretaker, next to his vehicle with a wooden box inside.
After the visual technical inspection and the opening of the wooden box in the presence of the judicial delegation, it was found that inside the box there was a plastic drum. The lifeless body of a person covered in lime was extracted from its interior. A priori, he could not be identified, although he was an elderly man, possibly the missing one. He was transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute to perform an autopsy and determine the causes and circumstances of death as well as his identity.
The caregiver’s wife stated that her husband is responsible for caring for a 90-year-old elderly man and that in July, when she picked him up from a hospital, during the trip home, the elderly man began to feel unwell and died in the car. She declared that her husband hid the body in a storage room of an apartment owned by the couple in the town of San Martín de Valdeiglesias (Madrid) and demanded that her husband tell what happened to the Guardia Civil, refusing to do so and moving the body to another place.
With the evidence obtained, the elderly man’s caretaker was arrested and brought to justice as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of homicide.
The Guardia Civil carried out a search at the detainee’s home in San Martín de Valdeiglesias where an amount greater than 64,000 euro in cash was seized.
In order to discover the origin of this money, it was discovered that numerous ATM withdrawals had been made from the victim’s bank accounts once he had died.
In addition, the agents have been able to conclude that the couple had access to all the victim’s bank accounts and cards. They took advantage of the fact that the deceased lacked family and emotional ties with other people to appropriate all of his assets through deception.
Also, they had purchased two vehicles with the old man’s money and even convinced him to put a property he owned in his name.
It has been estimated that, between the cash and the assets that they had appropriated, they would have obtained around 500,000 euro.
Operation “Dolomía” has culminated after several months of investigation with the arrest of this caregiver’s partner. The agents have been able to verify that this woman participated as an accomplice of the perpetrator of the homicide by having helped him hide the body to try to evade justice.
