Habitual abuser on trial

The Provincial Court of León will hear evidence from today against a 53-year-old man accused of habitual abuse in the family and a continued minor crime of unfair harassment of his wife and their daughter in Bierzo For which the Prosecutor’s Office requests six years in prison and the payment of compensation of 3,000 euro to each victim, in addition to the costs of the process.

The man maintained a romantic relationship for 30 years, including 23 years as spouses, with his now ex-wife with whom he has a daughter in common. The Public Prosecutor’s Office considers it proven that “since the beginning of the relationship” the woman “has been suffering a situation of absolute abuse”, with continuous insults and humiliation in public and private.

The situation worsened between 2018 and 2021, with threats and a greater degree of aggressiveness and violence. The victim, who had to be taken to El Bierzo Hospital on several occasions by her parents, attempted suicide in 2020 and the following year she informed him that she was ending the marriage and her intention to divorce.

The attacks then began to focus on their daughter, who had to receive psychological care for anxiety and depression. “The panic was such” that both women “decided to hire a security service for the home.”

The facts are, for the Prosecutor’s Office, constitutive of two crimes of habitual abuse in the family environment and two continued minor crimes of unjust humiliation. For each of the crimes of habitual abuse, he asks for a conviction of 3 years in prison, a ban on having weapons for 4 years and two days and a ban on approaching each victim within one hundred metres or communicating with her by any means for 4 years and 7 months. And for the two crimes of unjust harassment, he requests the penalty of 30 days of permanent location in his different address and away from the women. In addition, he demands payment of the costs of the process and financial compensation of 3,000 euro for his now ex-wife and her daughter for the moral damages caused.
