The King will preside over the new class of judges in Barcelona

On February 14 in Barcelona, the King will preside over the ceremony of handing over offices to the 160 members of the 72nd class of the judicial career, of which 119 women and 41 men are part.

As reported by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), the event will be attended by the interim president of the body, Vicente Guilarte, and the director of the Judicial School, Jorge Jiménez.

The event, which is held annually, will take place at 12:00 p.m. in the Auditori Fòrum of the International Convention Centre of Barcelona.

It will be the first time that Guilarte attends this event as head of the CGPJ, since he came to office last July after the forced retirement of Rafael Mozo, who in turn replaced Carlos Lesmes after his resignation in October 2022 due to the blockade in the renewal of the Council.

During his speech last year at this same event, Felipe VI referred to judicial independence as a “bulwark” that must be respected “both at an institutional and individual level”, while recalling that the rule of law demands of judges “a defence of the Constitution and the law.”

This time, the delivery of offices to the new judges will be celebrated with the future amnesty law as a backdrop. This same week it has resumed its parliamentary processing after Junts dropped the agreed text to push the PSOE to introduce new changes that guarantee forgiveness for all crimes of terrorism and high treason.
