Man on trial for killing friend by hitting him 30 times with a fire extinguisher
A trial has begun against a man accused of killing his friend in a pub in Calatayud in Aragon, by hitting him thirty times with a fire extinguisher.
The event took place during the San Roque festivities, in the early morning of August 13, 2022, when both men sneaked inside the establishment that the accused had previously run, but only he left the premises.
It was not until two days later when the perpetrator decided to appear at the National Police headquarters to confess the facts, by which time he had also withdrawn more than a thousand euro with the deceased’s credit card.
Following the confession, the police found the body of his friend, and although the establishment was closed to the public, the security cameras were still operational to the point that they recorded the last minutes of the victim’s life.
While the prosecution requests a sentence of 26 years in prison (23 for the murder and three for the fraud) with the concurrence of the mitigating circumstance of confession, the private prosecution increases the custodial sentence to up to 30 years. The defence, however, are calling for an acquittal.
The parties were summoned to appear yesterday at the Provincial Court of Zaragoza, before the Homicide Group of the Aragon Police Headquarters appear today, and on Wednesday, the forensic experts and, on Thursday, the presentation of the reports before the jury court, chaired by magistrate José Ruiz Ramo. The subject of the verdict will be delivered next Monday to the nine members of the town chosen to deliver justice.
