Fatigue is one of the most underestimated risks on the road, particularly during the summer holiday season. Long journeys, hot weather, heavy traffic and the excitement of travelling can all reduce concentration long before drivers realise they are becoming tired.
Fatigue is not just about feeling sleepy. Missing road signs, drifting within your lane, slower reactions or becoming impatient with other road users can all be early warning signs that your concentration is fading.
Although many drivers rely on coffee to stay alert, caffeine only provides a temporary boost and cannot replace proper rest. Planning regular breaks, drinking plenty of water and stretching your legs every couple of hours are far more effective ways to stay focused behind the wheel.
Motorways can also contribute to tiredness. Long, straight roads require less active driving, making it easier for attention to drift, especially in warm weather.
The safest approach is to plan rest stops before you need them and allow extra time for your journey. Arriving a little later is always preferable to continuing when you are too tired to drive safely.
