Drivers on the A-70 motorway near Alicante faced hefty delays on Thursday, after a multiple pileup caused queues of over 4 kilometres, with the police diverting vehicles via the toll road to ease congestion. The incident happened 750 metres from the exit to the Madrid extension, with the worst vehicle affected being a small van which became crushed between two articulated trucks. The driver of that vehicle was rushed to hospital in a serious condition, with the traffic taking over three hours to ease.

The Panoramis cinema in Alicante reopened on Friday, after the centre was shut down in February of last year. Eight screens will be showing the latest blockbusters, with the revival of the facility that has created 25 jobs in the provincial capital.

The town hall of Callosa de Segura has announced the launch of a 40 hour language course for teaching German to young people. A press release states that among the 5,000 languages in the world, German is still one of the most important. So important in these times of deep crisis mainly for young people, having knowledge of German improves your chances of working in German companies both at home and in other parts of the world.

The Cruz Roja of Guardamar visited 100 local schools this week, as part of the celebrations for International First Aid Day, recognised this year on the 14th of September, giving presentations on the importance of knowing basic, but crucial, life saving techniques. Preventing accidents and dealing with the immediacy of an incident were all presented to the children who joined in with a variety of practical exercises.

The Mayor of Guardamar has faced criticism this week, after his own car was spotted parked in a pay-and-display parking zone at Guardamar, but without the mandatory parking fee having been paid. The implementation of the paid parking scheme has met with protest and controversy since it was launched, to which this incident will no doubt add to the embarrassment of the council team, although they did explain that the Mayor was inspecting the beach area of El Moncayo as they had received notices of a number of dead animals, especially fish, in the mouth of the Segura river.

The beach rescue service for Elche, DYA, dealt with more than 2,000 emergencies during the two summer months, some 600 fewer than last year, when the figure was 2,900. The most common assistance was for jellyfish stings with 1,928 people being treated, another 272 for a variety of injuries and 22 having suffered concussion. The teams also carried out 17 rescues, transferred 37 people to hospital by ambulance, and treated 21 for the effects of heat stroke. The busiest beach for the life guards was at Arenales del Sol, where 1,256 interactions were recorded.

The PSOE opposition group in Jumilla has announced this week that not only has the PP Mayor lost the paramedic ambulance that serves the municipality, he has finally answered the question as to its whereabouts, with the simple answer, “I don´t know”. Acquired in 2007, the ambulance served some 800 emergencies per year on average, but since Enrique Jiménez took over as mayor, nobdy had seen the 100,000 euro ambulance, prompting repeated questions from other groups, which they say had been met with “lies and deception”, until this latest admittance this week. Emergencies are still being dealt with however, as a private ambulance has been seen operating in its place.
