EUROPEAN TEAM BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP TO OPEN AT EMERALD ISLE

The opening ceremony of the Ninth European Team Bowls Championship will open in a blaze of glory at the Emerald Isle Bowls club on Sunday morning at 9am.

Dubbed amongst bowlers as ‘The friendly Games’ this most prestigious of tournaments will see 16 teams, vying to lift one of the most significant trophies in the world of lawn bowls.

The fact that Spain has been chosen to host the games shows just how much the sport has developed here and as the host nation, this year, Spain is one of the favourites to lift the crown.

The Spain team will consist of Peter Bonsor (Quesada), Lynn Greenland (Greenlands), Graham Cathcart (Tenerife) and the current National Ladies Champion, Janet Dando (Indalo). All are extremely experienced bowlers and have represented their adopted nation on tournaments all over the world.

They will meet teams representing the nations of Cyprus, England, Germany, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Ireland, Israel, Jersey, Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey and Wales. There will also be a Presidents Select team which will make the number of entries up to the convenient number of 16. Two bowlers from Spain have been selected to play in that team, Lynda Hall from Marbella and a former Spain International bowler, Barry Latham of La Marina Bowls Club.

The games will be played at both the Emerald Isle and San Miguel Bowls Clubs starting on Sunday morning and running through to 4 October.

Admission is free to both of these venues and spectators are encouraged to go along and support their team. There will be commemorative programme on sale at both venues for the championship at a cost of 2 euro. www.virtualleader.info/european-bowls-championship-2013
