Now it was time to sit back and enjoy the cricket with the immaculately dressed and professional umpires and scorers getting the games on the way. Our professional match umpire was the, none other than the famous test umpire John Holder.

The venue was set for a fantastic 3 days of cricket, and the players did not disappoint us. All the teams fought competitively over the first 2 days,all team rallied to get into the semi finals, and then ultimately the final on Sunday afternoon.

All sports have some special moments that only very few lucky people get round to witnessing, for example, watching cricket being played with a pink ball,and lots of Ex County players taking part in this years Tournament and West Indean Cavaliers and Wimbledon CC who were sponsored by the ECB for winning there national group Tournaments and two from Spain, The Spanish select X1 and the Wambeeks Invitation X1 with the two from Norway,Sentrum CC and Star CC and one other was Waltham cc from the Uk.One Disappointment was that Stromas CC did not make the start on the Friday.

Friday got off to a great start in the first two games in the morning saw the West Indean Cav batting first Got off to a Slow start with 143 for 7 in 20 over’s to get beaten by Spanish Select X1 146 for 2 in 12 over’s With Tariq Ali 104 not out in 38 balls faced. The 2nd Game on pitch B saw Wimbeldon CC 243 for 6 in 20 over’s with F Matthecka 80,Penton 56,Crompton 46 beat the W.Invertation X1 who were all out for 121 in 18 over’s.

The other Games on Friday saw Star CC 185 for 8 in 20 over’s beat Sentrum cc 109 all out in 19 over’s. Then the Star CC 113 all out in 19 over’s and some tight bowling from Akil Patel 4 for13 and the W,Indean Cavaliers won this in 11 over’s the score was 117 for 1 and again Akil 58 and B Shafayat 46 saw then home with a comfortable and there 1st win of the Tournament. On the other pitch Wimbledon CC were having a Tougher Game than there first and Wimbledon batting first got 165 for 7 in 20 over’s and Waltham CC chased this total down with one over to spare 166 for 6 in 19 over’s.

On the Saturday Groupe( A) Sentrum CC 142 for 8 in 20 over’s were beaten by the west Indian Cav-144 for 1 in 14 over’s, again Akil Patel 90.the 2nd Match was Spanish Select X1 168 for 5 in 20 over’s and Sentrum CC were bowled out by some bowling by Spain for 108 in 19 over’s.3rd Game for the Spanish X1 was Star CC from Norway where Spain X1 got 192 for 7 in 20 over’s with Traiq Ali 82.G Crompton 56 and Bowled out Star CC for 133 all out in 18 overs,Ravi Panchal 3 for 18.Farhat 3 for 25 to finish leading the Group A.

And in Group B Wambeeks Invitation X1 got 134 for 6 in 20 over’s to b e beaten by Waltham CC 137 for 5 in 17 over’s to go top of group B.

Sunday morning was semi-final day with Spain Select X1 147 for 9 in 20 over’s and Wimbledon CC were all out for 87 in 15 over’s to get into the final to be played later in the day.The other Semi Finals was Waltham CC 140 all out in the 20th over,Afzaal 5 for 21 beat the West Indian Cav- 89 all out in 16 over’s to go through to the Final.

We had the 3rd and 4th place play off in the Afternoon with Wimbledon CC 106 for 8 in 15 over’s s this game was reduce to 5 over’s less and the West Indian Cav 108 for 3 in 12 over’s and be came the 3rd place in this tournament.

The final between Spanish select X1 and Waltham CC should have been a much closer affair for only if the Spanish batsman had knuckled down and set Walthan CC a respectable total against one of the tournament best opening attacks. Spanish X1 it would seem had decided that this was going to be an easy win and came out looking for boundary’s as Tariq was caught for 0 quickly, but a 2nd wicket stand of 68 brought the Spanish back into the game but this was not enough as they were held back to score a total of 153 for 5 in 20 overs..When Waltham CC Batsmen Tanveer 60 and K Ali 48 top scored for Waltham had 7 Spanish Bowlers trying to contain but fell short when they lost in the 17 over the Score been 154 for 3 and a great victory for Waltham CC to take the Cup Home to the UK.

The lords and Lady taveners X1 took on the Winners of the Tournament in a 10 over Charity Match under the guidnes of Mike Gatting and the Taverners Golf players we would like to thanks for there support in this game.Waltham CC 82 in 10 overs and the Gating X1 84 in 7.4 overs.

MIKE Gatting X1. Paul Grayson (Essex& England) SAM BILLING (Kent & England 19)

Neil Smith (Warwickshire & England) Akil Patel( W,I,C) Graham Napier ( Essex & England A)

Chris Nash ( Sussex & England) Chris Cowdery (Kent & England) Martyn Ball (Glouestershire & England)

The final finishing order was as follows;

1st Waltham CC, 2nd Spanish Select X1, 3rd West Indian Cavaliers, 4th Wimbeldon CC , 5th Star CC, 6th Wambeek Invertation X1, 7th Sentrum CC .Presantation was at the Gala Dinner with the Cups and Medals for the teams and there were medals for the umpires and scores who did a fantastic job over the 3 days.

There was one last award ‘Player of the Tournament’ to be decided by the umpires, this was a difficult choice but went to the West Indians Cavaliers Akil Patel for his excellent run tally and his Bowling in the tournament.

George Wambeek, Tournament Director and John Holder, Tournament Referee, and Mike Gatting OBE. And Sue Simons from the Taverners and their Special guests and the La Manga Resort and the Management would like to thanked everyone involved making this another truly memorable tournament at La Manga Resort Murcia,SPAIN.
