TRAIN TICKET PRICE INCREASES

Train ticket prices are set to increase by 1.9% on suburban and conventional journeys from the 1st of January, an increase higher than inflation, which at the end of last November showed an annual increase of 0.2%, but is below the 3% increase that was implemented in 2013.

Between 2007 and 2011, ticket prices saw an annual increase of 3.1% and 6.28% for commuter services, and between 3.1% and 5% the Middle Distance, regional routes. In 2012, the ticket price rose by a staggering 10.9%, which means that this year´s increase is in fact the lowest since at least 2007.

Train services have witnessed a drop in passengers at the same time as the prices have been increasing, commuter trains transported 339.20 million passengers in the first ten months of 2013, 0.3% less than in the same period of 2012, which ended the year with a 0.7% drop.

As for the inter-regional services, those which unite different provinces by conventional means, they were used by 20.8 million users between the months of January and October, a 3.1% drop from the previous year, which also saw a 3% fall.

High speed services do not fall in this pricing scheme, as they are controlled by the train operating company, not the government, as they are operated as commercial entities. These services have seen a drop in prices of up to 11%, along with numerous promotions and discount schemes which has seen an increase in the number of passengers using them.

In the first nine months of the year, a total of 19.03 million passengers were carried on AVE, high speed, long distance services, representing an increase of 12.1% over the same period last year. If the current forecast is maintained, the yearend figures are destined to show 25 million passengers using the service.
