On Friday, the councillor for infrastructure in the municipality of Orihuela, Víctor Ruiz of the PSOE, was given a guided tour of the coastal area by the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer of the Los Verdes green party. The aim of the tour, which was organised by Scheurer, was to familiarise the Orihuela based councillor with the Orihuela Costa and some of the problems faced by the residents, so that the infrastructure department will have a better understanding of why more money is needed on the coast. The Los Verdes green councillor to The Leader, “It is important for him to see the real problems, not just look at pictures, so that he can get a real feel for the problems faced on the Orihuela Costa”. Ruiz is relatively new to the government team, having only taken over the role within the council recently, following the departure of the socialist Antonia Moreno.
The councillor for works, Manuel Gallud of the Los Verdes, has received 336,000 euro funding from the public employment office, which will be used to hire 99 labourers to cover three major projects in the municipality, primarily looking after and improving the green and park areas. The first zone which will benefit from this work, once the recruitment process is complete, will be the Orihuela Costa. The councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, praised this decision, telling The Leader that “I am pleased that not only has my colleague from the Los Verdes promised to prioritise the improvements on the Orihuela Costa, it is refreshing to see that a decision can be made to give the coast priority for a change, something which has been very rare in the past”.
More work is being carried out improving the Orihuela Costa, with the long awaited footpath and pavement on the road which runs from the Los Dolces commercial centre now starting, and further aesthetic work to replace planters and flowers on the beachside wall at La Zenia. This latter project is also a unique improvement, as it will be the first to feature plants which have been grown entirely on the Orihuela Costa, in the relatively newly built greenhouse, which was constructed with the intention of allowing the garden maintenance workers to grow all of the plants needed for the coast, without having to go to the expense of purchasing them from outside suppliers, thus saving a considerable amount of money, whilst still improving the appearance.
The Orihuela Costa town hall, like most others around the country, has now switch to the summer operating timetable, which means that access to the public reduces, as the town hall now closes at 13:30. The staff inside still work beyond this time, but visitors must bear in mind the reduced hours if you need to be seen.
