Despite the fact that a statistical clean up of population figures was carried out by the Institute of National Statistics earlier this year, Orihuela has now not only recovered the number of occupants lost, but has surpassed the figure before the adjustment was made.
The councillor for the Orihuela Costa, Martina Scheurer, who had been criticised by opposition groups for being solely responsible for the loss of 8,000 residents, told The Leader that the official number of residents in the coastal zone now stands at 35,599, more than before the clean up was carried out.
Of that figure, 18,177, more than half, are British citizens, although there are a total of 71 nationalities represented. Within the Spanish population, around 3,000 people were wiped off the census, but 4,504 new people have registered as being residents.
In July alone, 16 people officially left the Orihuela Costa, whereas 252 new people arrived, 96 from other municipalities, again dismissing a myth that a mass exodus is leaving the Orihuela Costa to live in neighbouring Torrevieja. In addition, 156 were new residents, never having been listed on a padrón in Spain before. Finally in July, congratulations must be given to the families of the 8 new residents who arrived on the coast through the most natural way, by birth.
