A neighbourhood association who care for cats in the Alicante town of El Campello has reported the suspect poisoning of a colony of cats to the environmental arm of the Guardia Civil, SEPRONA.
The cats were all found dead on Sunday morning, with the exception of a lone survivor, surrounded by food which the association believe to have been poisoned. The surviving cat is being cared for at a local veterinary clinic.
The cats have been taking refuge in the area and, although a municipal ordinance prohibits the feeding of the cats, many neighbours had been feeding them, much to the frustration of others who wanted the cats gone.
The association has been proposing a sterilisation program for the cats, in order to prevent future breeding, but it would appear that somebody has taken the matter into their own hands.
Representative of the animal rights group Askampe, José Luis Seijas, expressed his regret at what has happened, saying that it is not the fault of the cats that they breed, supporting the calls from Antonio Ripoll, president of the local feline association, for the town hall to take measures to implement a safe and humane sterilisation campaign.
