TV Ban on Bullfighting Denied
Thanks to the majority votes of the ruling Partido Popular, the culture committee in the Spanish congress has rejected proposals to ban bullfighting broadcasts on television.
The motion was proposed by the Izquierda Plural and had the support of all other parliamentary groups. During the debate, the Izquierda Plural were critical of various initiatives implemented by the PP which aimed at promoting bullfighting, paying particular attention to an event which was broadcast on TV in May, at a time when children would be watching television, something which hadn´t been done since 2013.
A number of child protection associations have also expressed concerns over the broadcasts and want them at least moving to a time when children would not be watching, on account of the brutal nature of the events and the shocking images portrayed, which they believe are harmful to children.
