A local residents group say that no effort was made by Orihuela council to remove seaweed and algae from some Orihuela Costa beaches before last weekend’s bank holiday break. The FAOC (La Federación de Asociación de Vecinos de la Costa) said they had approached the authority about cleaning up a number of Campoamor area beaches like La Glea ahead of the long holiday weekend, but nothing happened. Coastal councillor, Sofía Álvarez responded by saying the situation on the beaches was a regular and natural one, with the appearance only temporary and that emergency action was not needed because the area was no longer in the “high” tourist season.
