Plans to Extend Cycle Paths in Alicante Province
A governmental committee from the province of Alicante has submitted a project for which they hope to achieve a grant from Europe in order to extend the bicycle lane network.
The president of the group, Jaime Albero, who also holds the post of mayor of Sant Joan d’Alacant, explained that the plan is to “present a sustainable project for urban mobility”, which includes connecting the existing cycle routes through the province, improving those existing routes, and developing an inter-municipal accessibility focus in order to provide continuity throughout.
The president explained that although many of the municipalities already have cycle routes, there is no interconnectivity between those municipalities. As a result, the network is fragmented and, to an extent, contradicts the aim of sustainable mobility, as other road vehicles are required to move between some relatively close areas.
The project, with it estimated budget of 1,250,000 euro, proposes to make nine routes, all of which have already been planned and now may soon become a reality.
The first route is around the Urbanova residential area and linking that to Alicante. A second takes in the beaches and tourist routes around El Altet and Los Arenales.
In Alicante city there is a route through the El Campello area, as well as one connecting Via Parque and Gran Via, as well as the university. El Campello will also be connected with the beaches of San Juan. The route from Orgegia and Mutxamel is to be covered by the project, connecting with San Vicente, and around San Juan.
