Shop stewards representing Elche’s footwear industry agreed last Wednesday to call their members out on a second strike in mid-July.
As talks broke down with employers, union leaders said there can be no agreement while bosses continue to breach the agreements signed in 2012, when wages were frozen, which agreed to a pay increase of 0.6% in 2013 and a further 0.4 % rise this year. Meanwhile, employers are refusing to accept union claims saying “there is a problem with their interpretation.”
Despite employers calling a further meeting for this coming Friday, José Antonio Macia representing the UGT, says that he is convinced that “this is nothing more than a delaying tactic so as to avoid a strike,” and “that it makes no sense to continue negotiations with employers when we regularly see them reporting increased profits, and that is why we are not willing to back down.”
