Warning over Lidl phishing scam

Published

on

An alert has been shared to warn people of a phishing scam that is masquerading as a message from the German supermarket chain in Spain, Lidl.

The alert was first raised by a suspicious recipient of a message seemingly from Lidl, announcing that she had won a prize, if she answered a simple question.

On this occasion, the prize on offer was an air fryer.

Suspicious of the message, the user tagged Lidl on the post, and they later confirmed it was not genuine, and that their security department is already investigating.

Therefore, the message has been confirmed as a potential phishing scam. In other words, cybercriminals have used a social engineering “technique” in which they try to defraud users under a false identity.

Normally, those who are dedicated to it select well-known companies, chains, brands…, since it is easier to deceive the victims. As has happened with Lidl, for being one of the best-known supermarket chains in our country.

How can we protect ourselves from this type of scam?

Technology can be a double-edged sword. Because while before it was much easier to detect this type of fraud, the truth is that cybercriminals are improving their techniques more and more. In this way, not falling for some of these scams can become an arduous task.

However, there are some tricks that we can carry out to reduce the possibilities. The first of them consists of paying close attention to what is being communicated to us in the message. Normally, we are told that suspicious activity has been detected in our account, that we have won a prize, that we must pay an invoice…

And almost always, it has some spelling mistake, the logo of the company that is being impersonated is something different from the original, or the sender’s domain is not known. Therefore, always pay attention to all the details, since it is quite common for something to escape them.

But, primarily, be alert and if in doubt, under no circumstances follow the process suggested.
