Major drug trafficking trial starts on Gran Canaria

Published

on

The first in a series of trials will start today, Tuesday, in the Provincial Court of Las Palmas, as evidence will be presented in the case known as “Operation Fermín”, in which 26 people accused of being part of an alleged gang of drug traffickers, with links to a National Police officer attached to the Maspalomas police station, will stand trial.

Specifically, there will be 12 sessions that will be held throughout the month of May.

In this case, in addition to the 26 defendants, a long list of witnesses will appear, including dozens of police officers who participated in the investigation and also colleagues of the accused agent.

The Anti-Drug Prosecutor of the Las Palmas Provincial Prosecutor determines in his indictment that these 26 people allegedly belonged to gangs dedicated to drug trafficking and requests penalties ranging from 15 years in prison -as is the case of the police officer- at five and the payment of fines that, added together, amount to the amount to millions.

The indictment of this separate piece of Operation Fermín, referring only to drug trafficking, leaves out six of the people who were investigated for whom the prosecutor requested provisional dismissal because he did not find sufficient evidence to accuse them.

The Prosecutor’s Office understands that the National Police officer allegedly collaborated with “different criminal groups for the introduction and distribution in Gran Canaria of drugs, narcotics and anabolics”, providing “coverage, security and providing information”.
