President of the Spanish government Mariano Rajoy will address congress at the end of this month, giving his side of the story in one of the biggest scandals to hit the government in recent years, speaking about his alleged involvement in the Barcenas case in which he has been accused by former Partido Popular Treasurer, Luis Barcenas, of receiving illegal cash payment from a slush fund set up in Switzerland, funded by illegal donations to the party.

However, the day in which Rajoy will give his address is perhaps not by accident, as it is also the last day before the summer recess, when Rajoy, and the rest of the Spanish political system, take a month, allowing plenty of time to consider his statement, without the ability to ask questions or seek further answers.

But if you have any concerns about how the political head may be spending his summer, having been unable to stay in his holiday apartment for “security reasons”, you do not have to worry any more, for he, his wife and two children, are booked to stay in a small, rural retreat, A Casa de Alicia, in the town of Ribadumia.

No doubt his mind will wander towards the autumn, when unemployment will once again rise after the summer, children go back to school amidst even more cuts, the strains of the post summer hype starts to hit business and tourism, at least the 270 euro per night bill will not be a concern, worth every cent for the 3,200 square metre property with private pool.

Bearing in mind that the minimum wage in Spain equates to 188 euro per week, at just over 750 euro per month, it is doubtful that any worker will be sharing the experience, at 3,780 euro for two weeks, the equivalent of 20 week´s wages for our minimum wage worker, but Rajoy will not be without his own discomfort, as smoking is not permitted inside the building, so his cigar pleasures will have to be confined to the outdoors.

As for the town itself, it does have a large Partido Popular following and the five thousand or so residents are governed by the PP, and with a lack of any organised events or protests planned or approved, at least Mr Rajoy and his family can enjoy the tranquillity of Spain in the height of the summer season.
