The widespread mourning for the victims of the Santiago de Campostela train crash is evident across the entire country, with flags at half mast, political leaders and Royals coming together in support of the victims, cities, towns, villages and individuals all marking moments of silence, sports stars and musicians dedicating their work in memory of the victims and Facebook awash with black ribbons, shown in front of the Galician blue stripe, as the ripple of association starts to spread wider.
One of the victims who lost her life in the crash has been identified as a retired teacher living in Rojales. Consuelo Florinda Iglesias Oreiro, the wife of a former Partido Popular councillor. Luis Fernández García, her brother in law, says that Consuelo was travelling to Galicia to attend both an annual meet-up with cousins, and attend a reunion of her own school friends, “most of them she hadn´t seen for 50 years and they are scattered around the area”, said Luis. Rojales has declared 3 days of mourning for the loss of one of their own.
With a number of people yet to be identified, most of whom are women, which has been put down to a phenomenon whereas despite a legal obligation to carry identity documents in Spain, most women choose to carry them in a handbag, from which they had become separated in the crash.
One person still confirmed as missing is a 73 year old businessman from Calpe, as yet not known if he was actually on the train or not, although he had intended to be and no contact has been made, for which it is assumed he was.
However, there were also local survivors in the crash, three members of the same family from Ontinyent were on board the train, all of whom have escaped, albeit not without bearing witness to one of the worst disasters in modern history.
Help is also afforded from the local pool of volunteers, with one of the psychologists who were drafted in to help the survivors and the families of the victims coming from San Isidro. Teresa Marín is the president of Alicante Psicólogos Sin Fronteras, or Psychologists Without Borders, who have specific training to deal with such catastrophes, although no doubt never wanting to put that theory into practice.
Among the tragedy, solidarity emerges amongst neighbours, co-workers, or even those who simply pass by, as Teresa explains, “It is remarkable solidarity of the people, there has been no one who had to ask for anything, whilst also recounting that, “the good organisation is clear, since the news broke, people came with food, blankets and all kinds of equipment to help families cope with a very difficult time and so much anguish”.
