Emergency teams were called to rescue a 33 year old man who had fractured a tibia after he fell whilst walking near the Cruz de la Muela, on the Or4ihuela mountainous range of Montepinar.
The incident occurred at around 10pm on Monday night between the mines and the religious icon of the crucifix named the Cruz de la Muela, when the man slipped, resulting in him breaking his tibia.
The 112 coordination centre received the call and alerted the local police, who in turn summoned the Orihuela fire rescue service, who rushed to the scene accompanied by an ambulance and members from the Protección Civil.
In view of the location of the operation, the Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, who is also the councillor responsible for the emergency services, made the call to summon the nearest regional emergency helicopter. Unfortunately, due to the rescue being at night, the helicopter is not operational due to cuts
The extraction had to be completed manually, with seven fire fighters, seven members of the Protección Civil, two paramedics, two officers from the local police and three relatives of the man, who also suffered minor injuries, all working together to manually transport the victim down to the road, where he was put into an ambulance and taken to the Vega Baja hospital at around 3:30 in the morning, some five and a half hours after the initial call was made.
