HOTEL SECTOR REPORTS IMPROVED FIGURES
Last Thursday morning a special session was held by representatives of Commerce and Catering . It was chaired by the Mayor of Torrevieja , Eduardo Dolon.
The meeting was called in order to address the results of the summer season as well as to confirm the schedule of activities planned for this next quarter of 2013.
It was agreed that the commercial sector experienced a significant turnaround compared to previous summers, mainly due to the growth of tourists leading to an increase in sales. It was said that in general, the summer, for both traders and restaurateurs had been good.
Most hotels had achieved an occupation figure of at least 88% which had resulted from a significant increase in French tourism as well as positive figures reported from the British, Scandinavian and Russian markets.
The Mayor said that he hoped to receive a formal reply from Valencia within the next few days on the liberalization of trading hours in Torrevieja in order to prevent the loss of competitiveness to their Orihuela neighbour who had already obtained this permission.
A number of new activities were announced beginning on 21 September along the Paseo Vista Alegre , with a day of “Street Tennis” which would be attended by Juan Carlos Ferrero. This would coincide with a Sports Gala expected to involve some 400 children aged between 4 to 16 years.
In addition there would be raffled gifts and tickets to the ‘Valencia Open 500 ATP World Tour ‘ 2013. A local trade Outlet will be held from 9-13 October, a Traditional Beer Festival on 18 and 19 October and an Associations Day on 20 October. The mayor added that a Christmas Market would also be held in the pedestrianised area of Torrevieja, the dates of which would be announced soon.
